Teenage Czech champion Martina Navratilova played her first U.S. match in 1973, losing to Chris Evert, 7-6, 6-3. It wasn't until their sixth match, two years later, that Navratilova's bold, intelligent play triumphed over the nimble Evert. Relentlessly rifling serves back over the net and lunging after impossible passing shots, Navratilova went on to win 1,650 matches, 19 Grand Slam titles and 167 singles titles during her extraordinary career.
